When to replace shoes

I have a pair of Aetrex tennis shoes, and I wear orthotics all the time inside the shoes. I wear out the inside of a shoe before the outside. Can you please tell me how long a pair of good tennis shoes will last someone that has CMT?

Thank you so much!

Hello and thank you for your question. When a patient has CMT the ability to control foot force and strike patterns is impaired which means that you will go through shoes a little faster than expected. I cannot give you an exact time frame, perhaps every 3 -4 months – but you can judge how well your shoes are holding up by keeping an eye on the back of the heel. Typically patients with CMT wear out the outside of the shoe faster and their foot is spastically pulled inward. Orthotics do help in distributing pressure and avoiding excessive forces when standing and walking. I think it is very astute of you to notice how your shoes are wearing down. Keep an eye on them and replace when you notice an uneven wear pattern at the heel.
