Top of foot pain at big toe

I recently got back from vacation where I hiked and biked every day. I wear hiking shoes with orthotics and I have cycling shoes that I have had for some time. The top of my right foot @ the base of my big toe has been hurting now since returning from vacation. There is some swelling, but not overly so. I have been soaking my foot in epsom salt and warm water as well as putting an ice pack on my foot several times a day. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hello and thank you for your question. Sounds like the great toe joint may be inflamed from excess movement (hiking). If this is the case it can take several weeks to reduce the inflammation. In addition to icing you can take NSAIDs such as Advil or Aleve. I would also limit the amount of flexion to the joint which includes walking, running, jumping, lunges, pushups etc. If the pain persists you can consider a steroid injection by a Podiatrist. I hope this helps!
