Top foot pain

I am feeling a slight pain in the top of my foot just below the ankle. The pain isn’t prominate when walking but rather in the downward kick motion when swimming. It does not appear to be swollen or red but has been bothering me for a couple weeks as I am on the high school swim team and have sort of had to kick with one foot while dragging the other behind.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your pain, although it does sound like either an anterior ankle or tendon issue. How much do you focus on recovery of the soft tissue of your lower leg? I would recommend starting by foam rolling the muscle on the front of your shin. I would also release your TFL (near the front of your hip), as well as your peroneals and bicep femoris (hamstrings).

If you do not regularly foam roll and release the soft tissue of your body I recommend this – especially with swimming and the large movements that are required of your body. If your pain persists I recommend seeing a Podiatrist who can better evaluate you.

    I hope this helps!
