I’ve been treating my big toenail for what I think is fungus. I took tablets for 3 months but didn’t see much improvement. I heard that it is sometimes a mold and not fungus. Did I maybe not do the right treatment? Any suggestions? Thanks
Hello and thank you for your question.
Do you have any history of trauma to the nail in which you are trying to treat the fungus? Although trauma is one of the leading causes of fungal nails – not all discolored brittle or thick nails are fungus. I often see trauma to nails which damages the nail bed, creating a thick, irregular nail – but it does not contain fungus.
If this is the case there is not too much you can do outside of keeping the nail thin or filed down. If your nail does in fact contain mold or yeast the treatment is the same as fungus so the medication you took would have addressed this. I hope this helps.
