Three months of extreme foot pain

It started from a day of allot of activitiy. The pain is sharp, deep and chronic. It’s below pad of foot beneath forth toe. It goes from base of foot to top of foot. The pain runs three fingers down along the side of my right foot. Advil or asprin does not help. Elevating foot doesn’t help. Heat is not working, or ice . I do have an arch, The tendon that runs from low end of small toe to top part of foot looks more pronounced than other foot. I don’t wear heels, I wear flats. I did buy some support athletic shoes from Dr Scholls. It’s very painful all of the time! I looked at the charts and they are not in the right area. I’m 53, and need to lose 20 pounds. My occupation calls for allot of walking and standing on my feet, for the last 20 years.
I know you will recommend a Doctor, but I would appreciate your thoughts on what the problem is.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your pain. Any pain in the area of the 4th toe I begin to think of a neuroma.

Neuroma pain can be sharp, radiating down to the toes and is felt most when pushing off or flexing the toes. If your initial recommendations such as limited activity, anti-inflammatories, icing and elevation did not provide relief – I would recommend seeing a Podiatrist. Further evaluation can get you an appropriate treatment – and hopefully relief.

    Good luck!
