Terrible pain and redness after wading in river for long period of time.

I’m very concerned for my boyfriend. We went fishing yesterday and waded in the river all day and evening. So, his feet were in water and hot most of the day. He goes fishing anytime he has time off work, so his feet are regularly in the river water. A couple days ago he complained of cracked skin between the toes, I got him some Tinactin a day or two before we went fishing yesterday. Now his feet are super sore, he limps and is in a lot of pain when walking, and a lot of redness and cracked skin. Is this just a bad case of athlete’s foot or something he picked up from the river? Help please!?

Hello and thank you for your question. Without seeing your boyfriend’s foot it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your boyfriends cracked skin.

If the redness is localized to just between the digits then you should be fine with a topical steroid, betadine or anti-fungal however if the redness runs to the top of the foot then it may be more than a simple fungal infection and may be bacterial.

If this is the case he may need antibiotics, but again I have not seen your boyfriend’s foot. If it does not improve in a couple days then I would recommend seeing a Podiatrist who can better evaluate him.

    Good luck!
