Swollen foot after rolling my ankle

I rolled my ankle a few weeks ago and experienced bruising and swelling on the outside of the foot just under the area of my small toe. The bruising has since gone away and my ankle has felt fine all along, but the swelling in my foot won’t go down and my pinky toe is actually being pushed inward from it. The area is also sensitive to touch, but I can walk on it fine. I’m also experiencing some topical numbness in the area. What could be going on??

Hello and thank you for your question.

If you have not had your foot x-rayed I would recommend this as the first step. I have had patients complain of similar symptoms and they ended up having a foot fracture.

If the x-ray is negative for a fracture then it is possible it is just a bone bruise or soft tissue injury which with enough time should begin to decrease. As far as the numbness – if there is inflammation of a nerve or swelling that is putting pressure on a nerve this can create the numbness you describe.

    I hope this helps.
