sudden heel pain

I have never had pain in the heel before. I woke up Monday morning, walked downstairs and notice a very sharp, aching pain in my right heel. I took Advil and rubbed with icy hot….seemed to get better and didn’t hurt so much yesterday. TOday by noon it really hurts again. No idea why. no history of injury.

Thank you for your question. When a patient comes to my office with heel pain, I always want to rule out osseous (bone) and soft tissue causes for pain. If you have no history of trauma or repetitive stress to the area, it is most likely soft tissue inflammation.

One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, or inflammation in the connective tissue (fascia) on the bottom of the foot. Plantar fasciitis typically presents as a sharp pain under the heel or arch during first step in the morning or after a period of rest. You can try to stretch your calves and roll out the bottom of the foot with a tennis or golf ball. If you notice a decrease in symptoms this is most likely what you have. If not, then I would see a Podiatrist who can take an Xray and better evaluate you for the various causes of heel pain.

    Good luck!
