stress fracture of 4th and 5th metatarsal

had a stress fracture of the 4th and 5th metatarsal of my left foot and wore an air cast for 6 weeks. I took the cast off two days ago at the suggestion of my doctor who said the newest xray indicated that the fractures were healing. I am now experiencing pain at almost the same pain level as I was experiencing before I started wearing the cast. How long does it take for the pain to subside for this type of fracture? thanks

Thank you for your question. Stress fractures can be quite difficult to heal and can be quite frustrating. When I have a patient dealing with stress fractures, ensuring adequate foot function is necessary to proper healing and recovery. Depending on your activity level and what sort of activity led to your stress fractures (i.e. running) doing foot strengthening is imperative. I have all my patients with stress fractures do barefoot exercises and eccentric exercises to strengthen the foot.

If you have any biomechanical imbalances in your feet, I recommend speaking to your Podiatrist about orthotics or check the Aetrex orthotics line – Lynco. If our foot biomechanics are not optimal then the increased stresses from walking or running can go into our soft tissue and bones leading to plantar fasciitis and stress fractures. I hope this helps!
