strange bump on foot

About a week ago I noticed that I have a bump on the side of my right foot, it is about a half inch in front of my heel on the side facing out. It is right on the side of the foot and then wraps around to the back slightly. It feels like a callus and I think it’s swollen, it’s hard for me to see it due to its location. It just appeared there, I have not injured myself. The only thing I can think of is I do work out on the treadmill 3 to 4 times a week for a half hour each time, but I’ve been doing that for about 9 months and I haven’t switched shoes so I’m concerned. It does hurt some and now I’ve noticed that my heel is sore and feels slightly swollen. It’s worst in the morning and then subsides throughout the day, I’m still able to use the treadmill. Another odd thing that I’ve noticed is that I have a hard time walking barefoot because it hurts, I have to wear at least socks, somewhere being barefoot now makes it hard to walk normal because my feet have become sensitive. I have no idea what this is and the things I do know about don’t seem to fit these symptoms. Thank you for any help you could offer.

Hello and thank you for your question.

Without examining you or this “bump” it is difficult for me to know exactly what you are describing. It sounds like it may be a callous or other hyperkeratotic lesion.

If you suspect it is a callous then I suggest debriding it at home with a pumice stone or emollient type cream. If you do not suspect that it is a callous then I suggest seeing a Podiatrist who can better evaluate you and examine this “bump” in person.

    I hope this helps!
