Stiff swollen painful left foot

Xrays show no fractures and pain can subside and the recur to the extent I can barely walk or bear weight. Can pinpoint specific spots of pain along top of foot toward the ankle side of 4th metatarsal. Third (middle) toe is swollen–no breaks shown on Xray for this either. Waiting for a referral from family doc, but wondering what this might be: stress fracture not showing up on Xray? Arthritis? Lack of mobility is a real pain!

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your pain. If you are concerned of a stress fracture it is important to note that they do not always show up on Xray.

There is a little time difference between Xray and real life bone health, so stress fractures typically need to be in the middle of the healing process before they show up. To fully rule out a stress fracture your Doctor can order an MRI, or the diagnosis is typically made on clinical examination. If you have not seen a Podiatrist I recommend seeing a foot specialist as they will be able to better examine you and rule out other possible causes for your foot pain.
