Shoes with ankle support?

Hello Doctor. I am an avid hiker and looking for a new pair of shoes. I have started seeing a lot of people hiking in Vibrams and more minimal shoes however I always thought that for hiking it is better to have shoes with ankle support. Do you recommend the more minimal shoes? I have no foot pain.

Hello and thank you for your question.

You are correct in that many people are switching to a more minimal hiking shoe. The reason why many people are switching is they want the freedom to move the foot and feel more of the surface on which they are hiking. I often recommend to my patients that it is based on foot type and foot strength.

If you have a neutral foot you are able to control the foot better than a person with a flat foot. For those people with a flat foot I often recommend foot strengthening prior to switching to a minimal hiking shoe.

Since hiking involves a lot of uneven surfaces the stronger the foot is, the better it will be at controlling the movement and preventing any ankle injuries. Since I do not know your foot type I would recommend any switch of hiking shoes to be gradual and always involve foot strengthening exercises.

    I hope this helps!
