Hi Doctor. I”m looking to get a new pair of running shoes, which do you recommend? I generally use motion control shoes as I’ve been told I have flat feet. I’ve always wanted to try more minimal shoes – can I do this with my foot type?
Hello and thank you for your question. Without seeing your foot, I cannot say exactly whether or not you’ll be able to tolerate a more minimal shoe, however I can say that all feet need to be sufficiently strong to tolerate the stress of minimal shoes. If you do have a flat foot (or over-pronation) then your foot type is less stable and requires either foot strengthening exercises or supportive shoes to avoid injury.
If you have not had your feet evaluated by a Podiatrist I would recommend getting a full foot biomechanical evaluation. Based on your foot assessment you may be able to start transitioning to a more minimal, zero drop shoe. As you do make this transition though make sure you focus on foot strengthening and foot recovery.
I hope this helps!
