Runner’s foot pain

I am a runner who has pain on the top of my foot, below my 4th & 5th toes going towards my ankle. It started about 2 1/2 weeks ago after doing a trail 1/2 marathon. My feet were tired after the run but I figured it was due to the rough surface. I wore trail shoes that are only a few months old. I didn’t fall, feel a pop, notice any bruising or swelling after. My foot is extremely sore. I’m taking ibuprofen regularly along with using ice and heat. Is this something that may just take time to resolve. I have not been running but have been doing crosstraining and using an elliptical in place of running. Help.

    Thank you for your question.

If you have not seen a Podiatrist yet, I recommend seeing someone who can better evaluate you. In any injury after running, I like to get an x-ray on all my patients to ensure that there is no fracture. Trail running can cause increase stress to the small bones in the foot, making them susceptible to overload and fracture.

If it is not a stress fracture or true fracture, you still want a closer evaluation by a Podiatrist. In the mean time I would minimize you activity and amount of time in a weight bearing position, as you do not want to further injure yourself. This would include any cross training or cardio machines.

    Good luck!
