Prepare for Marathon

Hello Doctor I am training for my first marathon which is in 2 weeks but am starting to get a new pain in the bottom of my foot. I am concerned it will get worse and I won’t be able to run the marathon. Do you have any tips I can do to quickly combat this foot pain and avoid foot pain that will keep me out of the race? Thank you!

    Hello and thank you for the question.

    The precise location of the pain can guage how you may be able to avoid serious foot pain. If it is mild foot pain in your arch or along the inside of your foot or ankle then stretching, icing, anti-inflammatories and adequate rest days may be all you need. However if the foot pain is more toward the ball of the foot and/or on top of the foot it may be related more to bone inflammation or the start of a stress fracture.

    I would start by integrating plantar foot release 5 minutes before and after running, calf stretching, icing and a rest day before long runs. In addition, do not switch to new shoes this close to the marathon as the body/foot may not have time to adapt to the new shoe. If your pain persists and you feel it every step you take then I would see a Podiatrist.
