Post Pregnancy

Hello Doctor Splichal. Ever since I had my first baby (3 months ago) my feet have been killing me. I can’t really pinpoint the pain as it is an all-over ache in my feet. I tried to wear comfortable shoes but they still bother me. I’m trying to start walking again to lose the baby weight but my feet hurt so badly. What can I do? Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your question. I actually see quite a few post-partum patients with very similar foot pain. During pregnancy we get an increase in the hormone relaxin which causes all the ligaments in the body – including the foot – to relax. This can result in the feet getting wider or changing shoe size post-pregnancy. In addition, because our feet are closely related to pelvic floor stability, as the core becomes weaker post-pregnancy, the pressure and stress on the foot increases. What I recommend is that patients start a core strengthening / Pilates program which in turn will address the foot pain. In addition, I would begin to strengthen the feet as well which is done through Pilates on the Reformer. If your pain persists then I would see a Podiatrist. I hope this helps!
