Possible broken toe?

I kicked the coffee table last night really hard and assumed it was broken. Not having insurance and no way to pay for medical tx at this time, here I am about 18 hrs later. It is my second smallest toe. The area surrounding the nail is purple/red and the top of the toe is swollen and grayish. I can fully bend it at the foot and hurts some when I squeeze the swollen part. The real pain comes from forcing myself to walk normal and from bending the toe down from the middle joint. Anything I can do myself at this point and let it heal naturally?

Hello and thank you for your question. Of course I suggest you get an x-ray to rule out a fracture. However if you do not have the money or resources, I cannot require you to do so.

If you cannot get an x-ray and confirm a fracture, then I’d start buddy splinting your 4th toe to your 3rd or 5th toe. This will greatly reduce the pain and stabilize a fracture if there is one.

A fracture would take 6 – 8 weeks to heal so I’d see how your toe feels after 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and then 8 weeks of taping.

    Good luck!
