Phantom feeling

This situation developed some years ago where it feels like I have something between my big toe and the adjoining toe. Its the same feeling as if I were wearing flip-flops and felt the strap between my toes only there’s nothing there. It isn’t painful, it just feels like something is between my toes when nothing is.

Hello and thank you for your question.

Sounds like you have a nerve compression issue. The nerve that supplies this part of the foot is the Deep Peroneal Nerve. When you have symptoms at the end of the nerve (which is what this is) it can be related to “stickiness” or adhesions along the nerve along its entire track starting at your lower back. A couple things you could try is myofascial release work (foam rolling), yoga (stretching) or what’s called nerve flossing.

All of these can be tried initially on your own or you can seek a Physical Therapist who is familiar with these techniques. Although you do not have pain now, any compression along a nerve can eventually alter the signal and cause pain. This means it is best to address it sooner than later.

    I hope this helps!
