Pain/lump at back of heal and also on one toe

Hi My daughter (16) has complained of a pain at the back of the heal for a few days – there is a raised area – looks as if it was hit but has had no accident, and now 4 days later she has a similar lump come up on the little toe on the same foot. It is very painful to the touch

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining the foot it is difficult for me to say exactly what these painful areas may be, however it sounds like it may be bursitis or joint inflammation.

The back of the heel is where the Achilles tendon inserts and depending on the foot type there can be a bony prominence which can get inflamed due to tight footwear or excess pressure. The same can happen on the toes if there is also excess pressure in shoes. I would start by seeing if the painful areas decrease depending on the type of footwear.

Many of these areas can be alleviated by simply wearing properly fitted shoes or by wearing shoes of a softer material. If you change the footwear and the pain persists then I would see a Podiatrist to ensure that it is not a more serious issue.
