Very painful ingrown toenail, possibly infected

Hi Emily! My right big toenail always gets ingrown. But this time is worse! Puss actually came out from the cuticle and I looked today and more must of came out when I was sleeping, it was all crusted up and redish. It hurts so so bad. It’s persistent, hurts to stretch the toe, extreme sensitivity, when someone steps on it I almost scream. I can’t even touch it myself without it hurting. I’d describe the number of pain 10+. I’ve always had this problem and I don’t know what to do. I visited the foot doctor plenty of times, but it just comes back as an ingrown toenail. My mother calls my toes (the grinch toes from that Jim Carey movie) please help, I don’t know what to do and I’m scared.

Hello and thank you for your question. I would definately recommend seeing a Podiatrist and having a partial nail avulsion done. To properly do a partial nail avulsion you must be numbed with lidocaine and then the side of the nail under the skin is removed. If you do not have this done the nail will continue to be painful and infected / irritated. If you do just antibiotics with no nail procedure then it will still not resolve. I would see a Podiatrist at your nearest convenience. Good luck! Dr Splichal
