Pain in middle of top of foot

Hi Dr. Splichal,

On Memorial Day, I went to take a step, but quickly had to change directions while just my toes were on the floor, thereby making a twisting motion in mid step. It swelled up & hurt quite a bit. I elevated the foot & placed ice on it the entire next day. I stopped all exercising for a week & it felt like it was slowly getting better. I was able to ride my bike, but not walk or run yet. I tried a lower body work out yesterday that involved some squats & lunges & today it is sore. I can rotate my ankle with no problem, bend my toes without pain, but if I press on the top middle part of my foot, it is painful. It has been over 3 weeks since my injury. Do I just need to rest it more or did I maybe injure a tendon?

    Thank you very much for your answer. My foot is much better after the additional two weeks of rest. I may start back with running by next week.

    Hello and thank you for the question.

    Sounds like you may have sprained your midfoot. There are many small ligaments on the top of the foot which means any one of these could have been irritated when you suddenly moved/rolled your foot. If the pain persists you can either try topical anti-inflammatories or go to a Podiatrist who can inject a steroid.

    I find patients respond very well to steroid injections for midfoot sprains. Good luck!
