Pain in the ball of foot after laying down

Hi Emily!

I am experiencing strange and sudden foot pain. I am 42 years old and just returned from a vacation where I was
walking alot but had no injuries to speak of. Suddenly, after resting one afternoon, I stood up and could barely stand or walk. The ball of my left foot was so so painful and slightly swollen. It went away after arnica gel, ice and standing. Now every time I lay down for awhile it hurts again really bad. On the ball of my foot and on the top. I felt the metatarsal bones and they seem slightly swollen or knotted on my left foot, but not my right. What coudl be causing this? Thanks.

Thank you for the question. For any patient presenting with pain after an increase in activity, I always like to take an xray to rule out a stress fracture. If the xray is negative for a stress fracture then it is most likely soft tissue injury. The small joints of our toes (which are in the ball of the foot) have many small ligaments which help stabilize the joint. Excessive activity can stress these soft tissue structures and lead to inflammation and pain. Since I cannot examine you, I suggest you go to a Podiatrist to get a full evaluation. Best of luck and speedy recovery!
