Pain for 9 months

Last August I went down a water slide and and pushed off of the bottom of the swimming pool. Immediately I felt a pain at the base of my second toe (next to the big toe). The pain was constant and increased with pressure. I could still walk, but each step was painful. I thought it would get better with time and rest, but almost 9 months later the pain is as bad as it was on day one. The pain is tolerable when I have good shoes on, but it is pretty bad when I am barefoot. I would have gone to the doctor months ago, but funds are limited and my insurance isn’t that great.

Hello and thank you for your question. Sounds like you are having an issue with your 2nd MPJ (toe joint). There are several issues which could be specifically causing the pain, however all are initially treated very similarly – with paddings and steroid injections.

If you are not able to see a Doctor then I’d try to get a hold of metatarsal pads or U pads (you can get online) and use them to shift pressure off of the foot.

If you notice this decreases the pain then you may need to use them for a good 4-6 weeks before seeing all the symptoms disappear. You may also want to try topical anti-inflammatories or icing as well.

    I hope this helps.
