Pain under my 2nd toe

Hello Doctor. I’ve been experiencing foot pain on / off for several years. Pain is generally under my 2nd toe and is on both feet. Doing some research I think the pain is due to my long second toe but I’m not quite sure how to eliminate the pain. I’ve tried inserts but they do not really help. Thanks.

Hello and thank you for the question.

A long second toe is often referred to as Morton’s Toe and can cause a lot of stress to the second toe joint. The second toe joint is the point of the foot that takes the most stress and pressure when we walk so having a long second toe makes you a little more susceptible to stressing this 2nd joint.

Continued stress to the 2nd toe joint can create instability and tearing of the ligament that stabilizes this joint. What I recommend for my patients who have this long second digit and pain is to 1. tape the 2nd digit to the 3rd digit which re-enforces this small joint 2. use a u-pad or metatarsal pad to offload the 2nd metatarsal head / joint when walking.

These two thing together with anti-inflammatories should decrease your pain. If your pain persists after trying to above for two weeks then I would see a Podiatrist.

    I hope this helps.
