My grandmothers foot

My grandmother has, since 24 hours ago had pain in her right foot. She complains of pain when walking. Last night, about ten hours ago, she noticed redness on both sides of the foot, by the ankles. The pain is still there now (the morning after) and i think the redness has gotten bigger in size. I think there might be a slight bit of swelling but i can’t see that over her socks now that she put them on. Please write to me and tell me what this could be. I read about blood clots and am freaked out. She does have high blood pressure and varicose veins. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining your grandmother it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing the redness at her ankles. A clot or DVT would typically present as redness, swelling and pain in the middle of the calf – not the foot. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it is not a clot, so if you are concerned I would have her go to a medical doctor and get a Duplex Ultrasound. If it is redness associated with inflammation in the tendons of the foot, this initially can be treated with ice, limited activity and compression. If the redness and pain persists I would recommend seeing a Podiatrist who can better evaluate your grandmother. Good luck!
