Local anesthetic needed for nail biopsy?

Is it normal to perform a nail biopsy without any local anesthetic? I recently went in to have my nail checked and the podiatrist insisted on doing a biopsy. He wiped my toe with alcohol and took a Straight razor to it. As I cried in pain while he sliced he mentioned he had to get to the nail bed. When I asked is there any local analgesic he could apply he simply said “we’re almost done. I’ll prescribe you some hydrocodone.” There was blood. This was hands down the worst doctor I’ve ever experienced. Please advise.

Hello and thank you for your question. This is an unacceptable approach to take a nail biopsy and is something I would never do to a patient. As a doctor I never inflict uncessary pain to a patient when there are options such as local anethesia. I am sorry you had to go through this!
