lateral foot pain

I have a protrusion on the mid lateral side of my foot (bone) and it is sometimes in a little pain. What is the cause of it and can it be corrected?

Thank you for your question. It sounds like you are describing the styloid process or base of your 5th metatarsal (long foot bone). This bone is a normal foot structure – however depending on foot type this bone can become more prominent. There is a tendon that attaches to this prominence which can easily get irritated. Excess pressure from shoes can cause a bursitis in the area. All these can initially be treated with wider shoes and stretching.

If the pain persists despite this initial treatment, then I recommend seeing a Podiatrist who can take an Xray and better evaluate you. Good luck!
