Lateral foot pain

My husband has had a moderate sized lump on the lateral aspect of his left foot midway between his baby toe and his ankle for a year or so. Over the last month it has become increasingly painful and slightly swollen. I have tried researching what it could possibly be, but it is not found on any web site I have looked at. Could you help? Any ideas?
Thank you

Thank you for your question. Without examining his foot or seeing a picture this is going to be difficult for me to say for sure. Having said that our styloid process is in the area you are describing and I see many patients with concerns around this area.

A prominent styloid process can increase the risk of inflammation or bursitis over the bone. This is especially common if wearing tight or stiff shoes. I’d try to wear shoes that do not put excessive pressure on this bone, ice the area 15 min at the end of the day and massage the peroneals on the side of the lower leg.

If your husband’s pain persists then I’d see a Podiatrist for an in-person evaluation.

    I hope this helps!
