Jones fracture

Hi, I have a fracture of my 5th metatarsal. The ER doctor told me it was a Jones fracture and that I should be not put any weight on the foot. I followed up with the ortho and she said it wasn’t a Jones Fracture, but it wasn’t an avulsion fracture. She said it was right on the line between the two zones. I am in a walking cast, but I am still having pain. I was wondering if the prognosis is the same as an avulsion fracture or is the possibility of nonunion greater? Thanks.

Hello and thank you for the question. Without seeing your xray I cannot give my recommendation on whether it’s a Jones Fracture or avulsion fracture. I would however trust the Orthopedist over the ER doctor as this is their specialty. For an avulsion fracture a walking boot is sufficient and will take 6 – 8 weeks to heal. To have pain in the area is normal as you do have a fracture so I’d still limit your ambulation as much as possible. If you are concerned of a non-union then I’d limit your ambulation despite the walking boot as much as possible, however again I’d trust the recommendations of the Orthopedist and am sure it is a avulsion fracture.
