injury or something else?

My 11 year old son plays soccer. His feet sometimes hurt afterwards but an ibuprofen and rest usually help. On Thanksgiving he was playing for fun on turf. He said he planted his foot and it got stuck. He is since complaining about pain on the top and inner of his foot. He cannot stand on it directly. It hurts most in the morning and lessens during the day but he is still limping. The pediatrician said it might be a sprain but it’s not getting better. Should we xray? Could it be something more than an injury? The hurting more in the morning sounds like plantar faciatas to me but it’s not his heel. Any guidance you can give me would be great. Thanks.

Thank you for your question. For an injury such as this, I would definitely go to a Podiatrist and get an Xray. Injuries in children you always want to get an xray to rule out fractures, damage to a growth plate or joint dislocation. When you go to the Podiatrist, have them pay special attention to the Lis Franc joint. This joint is commonly injured during soccer and football – and can cause pain to the top of the foot. In the mean time, I would keep him off of the foot and limit his activity. Good luck!
