Ingrown toenails

How to prevent ingrown toe nails? I tried wearing W size shoes, but I end up having to go to my pedicurist to cut away the ingrown.

Thank you for your question. Outside of improper shoe fit, there can be several reasons for chronic in growing toenails. One of the most common causes of ingrown toenails is improper nail cutting technique. When cutting the nails keep the edges square instead of rounding them. This will prevent the edges from growing into the skin. Also any past trauma to the nail bed can lead to improper nail growth and nail shape. Another common cause for ingrown toenails has to do with improper foot biomechanics. If someone has a flat foot or over-pronated foot type, they will push off of the side of their big toe. This causes excess pressure and frequent ingrown toenails on the outside edge of the big toe. Without evaluating your foot it is hard to say exactly what may be the cause of your ingrown toenails, therefore I do recommend you see your Podiatrist for further evaluation.
