Ingrown Toenail

Hello Doctor.  I have a pain in my great toe along the nail.  I’m not sure if it is ingrown or infected but I feel it every time I put on my running shoes. It’s starting to radiate up my foot. When I look at my nail it’s red and puffy on the side. What can I do as I do not have health insurance? Thank you.

Thank you for your question. Without examining you I cannot say for certain, however it does sound like you have an ingrowing nail or the start of an ingrowing nail. Some ingrowing nails can resolve on their own with juts time and Epsom salt soaks – while others require a partial nail avulsion. If you do not have insurance and want to start by doing daily Epsom salt soaks this may provide some relief, however if the pain and tenderness to the nail persists then I would see a Podiatrist as the most appropriate treatment would be a partial nail avulsion. I hope this helps!
