heel pinching pain when walking


I am a 36 year old female. I have 4 small children and had gestational diabetes with the last 2 pregnancies. I’m about 40 pounds overweight (5’6) and 180 pounds. I’m trying to loose weight so I’ve been running/jogging very slow in the mornings. I’ve been doing 3-4 minute slow jog and 2 minute walk for about 3 miles on pavement in 5 finger vibram shoes. When I wore my aesics, my outer toes would get numb. The 5 finger shoes felt great and I tried running from toe to heal and taking it easy. It all went well until last monday I felt a pinching feeling under the outer bone of my right foot. I’ve not run since then – it has now been almost 7 days and the pain hasn’t gone away. It doesn’t hurt unless I’m walking. It feels like a pinching pain right side of my heel when my hurting foot is behind my other foot as I walk but still bearing weight on it. Any ideas of what it could be? Should I go back to my regular shoes?
I’m not sure who I should see…PT, Chiropractor, orthopedist, podiatrist. I’m a little sad about the lack of movement it is causing me because I want to be active and loose this weight and was feeling good about my morning jogs. no swelling or discoloration, pain under fibula – outside (that ankle bone) tender when you push on it
Peroneal nerve tendonitis – could it be this? Please help! Busy mom of 4.

    Thank you for your question. Whenever I have a patient who begins a new exercise program or increase in activity, overuse injuries always need to be ruled out. When running in Vibram shoes, there is an increased demand on the muscles of the foot and ankle.

    Although there is media around minimalist running/jogging that it has lower injury rates and decreased stress on the foot – a person must slowly adapt to this different running/jogging pattern. I would see a Podiatrist if I were you to get an Xray and make sure you do not have a stress fracture. If everything turns out to be okay – then I would gradually ease back into the exercise program.

    Since you are both walking and running in your Vibrams, you may actually benefit from wearing regular supportive sneakers as these are a better option for walking. If you in fact do have a stress fracture or a tendonitits, you can still maintain your exercise programming with non-impact activities such as rowing, cycling or an elliptical machine. Running is a great exercise option, but has 3 -4 times are body weight in ground reaction forces – so the injury rates can be quite high. Good luck!
