Hi, I have just all of sudden in the past week experienced severe heel pain. The right foot on the outer aspect of the heel. It hurts when I walk. It also hurts alot when I stand to walk. I was just wondering what the pain could possibly be.
Thank you for your question. Without examining you it is hard for me to say exactly what may be causing your pain, however I can give you some general guidelines. Although most people often think of plantar fasciitis when they think “heel pain”, there are other causes of heel pain including posterior tibial tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis and peroneal tendonitis to name a few. All of these conditions are inflammatory and can initially be treated the same way. Controlling inflammation can be done with oral anti-inflammatories such as Advil or Aleve, or with ice. To eliminate the stress on the tissue,
I recommend using supportive footwear, minimizing activity and integrating light stretching. If your pain persists for more than a week I recommend seeing a Podiatrist who can better evaluate you. Good luck!
