hammer toe

hi my 3 month old son has hammer toe (the toe next to his big toe) this is on both feet and it is now causing his 2nd and 3rd toe to overlap is there anything I can do to prevent further overlap or is he to young. also is he ok to wear shoes or will this make it worse ?

    Hello and thank you for the question. Curly toes in infants can be common, and are best managed through de-rotational taping. As the soft tissue starts to grow, the taping will create a brace to hopefully encourage the toes to grow straight.

    Sometimes the shoes can create excess pressure on the toes, so I would assess the sizing of your infant’s shoes to ensure this is not the case.
