fracture

Previously I have fractured both of my feet. Recently I went on vacation and did a lot of walking. Now I have another foot fracture. My shoes were new but broken in. I wear custom orthotics and they were in my shoes when I was doing al the walking. I am menopausal. What can I do to prevent another fracture?

    New Balance shoes are good and offer sufficient support and cushion. Aetrex also offers a great line of comfort and athletic footwear which I would recommend. As far as stretching I recommend calf stretches daily (at least 5 minutes) as well as release to the bottom of the foot by standing on a golf ball, tennis ball or there is a great product called Yamuna Foot Walkers.     I was wearing new balance running shoes that were only 1 week old. What shoes are supportive and cushioning? You mentioned stretching my feet – what are some stretches?

    Hello and thank you for the question. I am assuming you are talking about stress fractures? There are several things you can do to hopefully prevent another stress fracture. Always make sure that you have supportive, cushioning shoes that can take some of the impact forces when you walk. Try to keep your feet flexible by stretching daily. The more flexible our feet are the better they absorb shock. Finally bone density is important in the prevention of future fractures. If you have not had a bone density test yet, I would recommend having one done. This can be ordered by your PCP or Gynecologist. There are some great supplements for bone health including Vit D3, Calcium and most importantly Vit K2. I hope this helps!
