Thank you for your question. Without examining you I cannot say exactly what may be causing your pain, however I can give you some guidelines. Whenever I am presented with a patient who has top of foot pain after exercising I begin to consider a stress fracture or a small ligament injury. Stress fractures are common when running or exercising due to the repetitive stress placed on the foot. A stress fracture, like any fracture requires immobilization to allow the bone to heal. Although most stress fractures do not show up on routine x-rays, it can be diagnosed clinically by a Podiatrist. If it is not a stress fracture, then it can also be injury to a small ligament in the midfoot. The midfoot is a complex arrangement of small bones, joints and ligaments. Repetitive movements during exercise can stress the different joints. This will typically resolve after rest, ice and anti-inflammatories. To be on the safe side, I recommend seeing a podiatrist so you can get an x-ray and be better evaluated.
