foot pain

I am a 29 year old woman who is in pretty good health. For the past couple weeks, I have been having pain on the ball of my foot in 2 areas. It hurts when I walk on it, and just in general. I was thinking it could be calluses. I have been putting a calluses removal pad on it for almost a week now. It doesn’t seem to be helping that much. Do you have any ideas on what it could be? I have flat feet. Sometimes I have pain on the inside of my foot when I walk. Could a calluses press against something, causing pain on the inside of my foot? I haven’t been to a podiatrist yet. Do you think it is necessary for me to make an appointment? What would they do? Thank you so much for taking the time to respond back.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your pain. It could just be calluses (which can be very painful) or they could be IPKs or even plantar warts.

In general I tell patients not to use over-the-counter callus removers – as I’ve seen too many patients that leave them on too long and it creates a sore on their foot. I would see a Podiatrist who can better evaluate you do a biomechanical exam to see if you do have flat feet and if they are what’s causing the calluses.

If this is the case then you can use either custom orthotics or over-the-counter orthotics (such as Aetrex Lynco® orthotics) to control the flat foot and excess pressure. Good luck!
