Foot Pain

Hello Emily,

I am a runner and I pulled something in my foot back a short time before Thanksgiving. I am assuming it was a tendon or ligament due to it’s placement. I took a couple weeks off from running but ran in a Thanksgiving day race. It felt fine after that so I ran the next few days. It’s been doing fine since then however the other day I was stretching my calves and I felt a sharp pain in the same spot as before. I am really frustrated as to why it’s not going away. At this point, I am icing a lot hoping that within a week to two weeks, I can get back to running.
The area of pain is on the inside of my left foot, kind of right below the end of the fibula bone. Really where it hurts the most is the soft area that kind of sticks out on the inside of my foot, right above the arch. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I am hoping that it’s not anything too serious and maybe just something pulled however I would love your advice.

Sincerely, a hurt runner:(

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your pain, however I will give you general guidelines.

With all foot pain, it is important to pull back on any activity that is aggravating your foot pain. If you took some time off and the pain has persisted once you resumed activity, I would suspect that your injury is a little more than a simple sprain or strain. If you have not seen a Podiatrist yet, I would get a full examination and possible Ultrasound or MRI to rule out any possible tear in a ligament or tendon.

    I hope this helps!
