Foot pain on the 5th metatarsal

I have had a pain in my right foot on the 5th metatarsal toward the back, this has happened before on my left foot and the doctors did not know what this was? UK doctors I guess? now this has started on my right foot. I am a runner who has been running for years since I was a child, so I am not over weight. What can this be?

Hello and thank you for your question. Sounds like you may be experiencing some peroneal tendonitis at its insertion. The peroneal tendons run alongside our lower leg and insert in the side of the foot at the 5th metatarsal. When we run, walk or balance on one foot, we place tension on this tendon.

Depending on your foot type and level of activity you may be more susceptible to tendonitis. You can initially address tendonitis by myofascially releasing the peroneals. I recommend using a foam roller, or you can check out some products by TP Therapy If your pain persists, I recommend seeing a Podiatrist for a more thorough evaluation. Good luck!
