Foot Blisters

Hi Doctor,

I recently got a blister right on the bottom of my foot, that has gotten out of control. It is about 3″ around – it has popped, and the skin has ripped away. I would consider it an open wound now – but all around it, is very red, with smaller blisters present. (I have photos, just no way to attach).

I’m just wondering, what the best treatment for a popped blister, with no skin over it is. should I soak it? keep it dry, put ointment on it?

thanks for your time,

Hello and thank you for your question.

You will want to keep the area protected. If you put a dry dressing directly on it, it will be painful when you try to remove it. What I suggest is a Vaseline based dressing such as Adaptic then cover it with dry dressing.

You want to avoid excessive friction as this is what causes blisters so if it was certain movements or shoes that caused the blister, avoid this until it heals. If you notice an increase in redness then you can also use bacitracin over the dressing or Adaptic.

    I hope this helps!
