Flaky skin on sole of the feet

I have very flaky dry skin on the sole of the feet. The skin is very thin, breaks and bleeds occasionaly. It is not painful -only when cracked.
Over the counter creams do not help. A doctor given me steroid cream, which cleared some of it on the instep but the rest is as before. Have you got any advise.

Hello and thank you for the question. Without seeing your foot it is difficult for me to say exactly what is causing the dry, flaky skin.

Many times it is related to fungus. If you have not tried an anti-fungal cream this is a great place to start. If it does not respond to the anti-fungal medication then it may be dermatitis or another inflammatory skin condition.

This is where the steroids are beneficial. If you try both the anti-fungal medication and steroids, you may want to consider a skin biopsy which will determine the cause of the flaky skin. You do want to give it a good 4 weeks of treatment before considering the biopsy though.

    I hope this helps!
