falling arches – senior woman

advised my POD that I have falling arches. Have been aggressively trying and retrying different shoes. told I need a stability or motion control shoe. I get it; but practically ever brand name stability shoe (Brooks, NB, Asics), their shoes all hurt my right arch. Left foot not a problem. I don’t know if this means I’m getting too much arch support or not enough. We’ve talked about orthotics; currently have a custom one which is horrible. Had the same problem with custom orthotic and OTC (ala-superfeet). I’m about ready to just go out and buy a Keds shoe! I do have an extra navicular bone by my right heel. I don’t think that’s the issue. It’s just that my right arch screams with good stability shoes.
xrays show nothing; other than arthritis and osteoporis bones

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining your feet it is hard for me to say exactly what may be causing this pain however I will do my best.

Excessive arch pain can be due to either a shoe/orthotic that is too aggressive (high) or not aggressive enough. If the shoe is not aggressive or supportive enough this will cause the soft tissue ligaments and tendons to be stressed causing pain.

This is my guess for why you are feeling pain. The custom orthotics are always a better bet vs. motion controlled shoes. Shoes will never provide as much supportive as custom orthotics. I would discuss this concern with your Podiatrist and if necessary consider custom orthotics to put in the shoe.

    I hope this helps!
