Experiencing Foot Numbness

Hello Doctor.

I’ve been experiencing numbness in my left foot. I was in a car accident a year ago and since then I started to feel numbness. I feel like it is getting worse and I’m scared I won’t feel my whole foot soon. Should I see a Podiatrist? My Primary Doctor?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hello and thank you for the question.

Sounds like you may be experiencing what is called radiculopathy. Whenever a patient presents with numbness only in one foot and has a history of low back injury we always want to consider nerve pain due to disc herniation or nerve impingement. Did you ever have a back MRI after the car accident? This is the best test to determine if there is an issue with the vertebral discs.

I would first see a Neurologist or Physical Medicine Doctor as if you see a Podiatrist they would have to refer you to this Doctor first to order the tests.

    I hope this helps!
