deep ache at top of foot

Hi Dr Splichel,
I get a strange ache in my foot – it’s at the front, at the top, where the foot meets the ankle. I seem to get it when I wear sandals – it starts towards the end of the day and lasts for a day or two afterwards. It makes walking quite painful. The ache feels like its in the soft part right at the botttom of the front of the leg, just as the slope of the foot starts.
Any advice would really be appreciated.

Thank you for your question. Often times, improper shoes can stress the soft tissue structurs of our feet and ankles – this includes tendons, ligaments and joint capsules. Without examiniing you it is hard for me to pinpoint which structure is causing you pain, however the initial treatment is the same. Resting, controlling the inflammation and avoiding the shoes or activities that irritate the tissue is important. After a week or two of this, you should be feeling much better. If the pain persists, I would see a Podiatrist who can take and xray and do a full evaluation.

    Good luck!

There is a nerve that runs across the top of the foot that can get compressed by tight straps, or lacing. It distiributes to top of foot to toes, and can sometimes cause a numbness between the first and second toe. Check to see if the sandal straps are too tight, or get a new pair with straps located differently. This may help
