Custom Orthotic Materials

I visited two podiatrists who recommended I get fitted with custom orthotics. However, each molds their orthotics from different materials. One uses plastics while the other uses foam. I did some reading and realized there are so many other materials that are being used today. Which one is the best?

Hello and thank you for your question. Everyone has their opinion on which material is best for casting / scanning for orthotics. Most Podiatrists will use digital scanning devices or the foam boxes. Very few do the plastic casting as orthotic labs do not accept these impressions anymore. For the best scanning device I would use the digital scanner or pressure mat.

The end result – regardless of impression type – should be very similar. It is actually the prescription or modifications set by the Podiatrist that makes the difference. I hope this helps!
