Crusty skin around big toe nail

I am a 62-year-old female and have started to develop hard crusty white skin around my big toes. What is causing this and what can I do to alleviate and prevent it? Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without seeing your foot I am not sure if you are describing a callus or a possible fungal infection. I’m guessing it is a callus based on how you describe it. If it is a callus then you can debride / shave down the skin however it will most likely return as calluses are due to pressure. Often times improper biomechanics and walking can lead to calluses. If you are looking to rule this out then I’d suggest getting a evaluation with a Podiatrist. I hope this helps!
