Hi Dr. Splichal. I’ve been getting cramps in my feet and calves so bad at night that it wakes me up. I heard that eating bananas can help, is this true? I also want to make sure it isn’t something more serious like a clot?
Hello and thank you for your question. Most cramping in the feet and calves are more common at night due to dehydration, inactivity and a shift in circulation.
I often advise patients to stretch their calves at least 5 – 10 min before bed every night, as well as ensure that they are in taking adequate electrolytes, including sodium and potassium.
So yes, bananas can reduce cramps for this reason. If the cramping in the calves is also associated with increased pain, swelling and redness, then I would see your medical doctor as a clot or DVT will want to be ruled out.
I hope this helps!
