due to bunions, my big toes turn inward towards the neighboring toe. Because of this, I have callusses on my big toes. One of the callusses has red spots (like blood). What could be going on?
Hello and thank you for your question. It is not uncommon to see calluses on the big toe in a patient with bunions. This is referred to as a pinched callus as the skin gets pinched with every step you take. This pinching of the skin can often cause enough trauma that there is a small amount of bleeding under the callus. I would not worry about the blood under the callus as this will often resolve when the callus is removed. If you have not seen a Podiatrist yet, I recommend having a full biomechanical exam as there may be a way to better control the way you walk and stress your great toe joint.
