Blisters and tough skin on toe

Hi Doctor,

I run almost every day and have developed blisters and really tough skin on my 2nd toe. It is important to note that my 2nd toe is longer than my first. I have heard about using toes cushions but wanted to get your opinion. If this keeps up, I will have to cut down on the running as it seems to be getting worse by the run.

Hello and thank you for your question. You are experiencing what many people with a longer 2nd toe experience. When the 2nd toe is longer than the 1st or 3rd toe, there is an increase in pressure to the tip of the toe. This leads to calluses, blisters and often fungal nails to the 2nd toe. What you can do to avoid this issue is buy your shoes to fit the 2nd toe, not the first. If the issue persists despite wearing larger shoes, then I would see a Podiatrist who can discuss additional options.

Often times, hammertoe surgery is offered to shorten the 2nd toe so as to avoid the excess pressure at the tip.

    Good luck!
